Many struggling farmers, miners and labourers have turned to tourism to make a living, which means a trip to the outback is now a fascinating adventure.  Many people are attracted to the outback merely for the chance to experience the solitude that one cannot find in modern cities.  A memorable outback experience for backpackers and visitors to New South Wales consists of working for a time as a jackeroo or jillaroo (cowboy or cowgirl) for an outback cattle station.

National Parks and conservation areas scatter the outback, each with their own distinctive feature or attraction.  Surrounded by national parks Broken Hill is where you can expect to see emus, wedge-tailed eagles, bearded dragons, shingleback lizard and red kangaroos.  Wentworth is the ideal base for a day trip to world famous Mungo National Park, a day trip to Broken Hill or visit one of the many local wineries.
There is lots to do and see in Burke, simply go walking and observe the beautiful, old, colonial buildings or why not take a trip on the Darling  River on a paddle boat and if you feel like a drive go out to Mount Gundabooks  National Park and see the Aboriginal rock art.  Brewarina, was for thousands of years an Aboriginal meeting place when 10's of thousand used to gather from time to time, is situated on the Barwon-Darling River.
