Location:

Whilst you might find the tiny village of Sandford on a map just near Lauderdale on Hobart's Eastern Shore, Sandford is quite a wide area on the South Arm Peninsula, known locally as Paradise Peninsula. The Boat Shed sits on a point on the Ralph's Bay side of the Peninsula at the south end of Mortimer Bay, looking along the pine-bordered sands of Gorringes Beach. Whilst we are 32 kilometres from the centre of the city, it is a pleasant 25 minute drive on good roads with brilliant water views along the way. For guests from interstate or overseas, it is almost inconceivable that the first traffic light you will encounter is as you enter the central business district. We are a comfortable 20 minutes from the airport and less than 10 minutes from Lauderdale. This is a well-serviced village with restaurants, hotel, doctor's surgery, chemist, take-away food stores, deli, grocery and general store, petrol stations, hairdresser and video shop. You will certainly need a car if you're staying at The Boat Shed, as our bus services to the city are not all that regular. Whether you are arriving from Devonport on the ferry, from Launceston, from Hobart airport, or from Hobart City, we will send you very clear instructions and a map of how to find us before you leave home.

Local Attractions:

Hobart is a wonderful area from which to explore Southern Tasmania, and there are some extraordinary day trips which are easily accessible from The Boat Shed. Whether you are travelling to the beautiful Tasman Peninsula and the famed Port Arthur or to the breathtaking Huon Valley, all can be accessed easily from our location at Sandford. Here's just a few suggestions: ? Take the cliff top walk to Hope Beach ? Walk parts of the Tangara Trail and Gorringes Beach ? Watch the many birds of the area, particularly those native to Tasmania ? Shop at the Salamanca Markets (Hobart on a Saturday) ? Tour the Cadbury chocolate factory (Hobart's Northern Suburbs) ? Go back in history at Port Arthur (Tasman Peninsula) ? Visit Coles Bay and Freycinet Peninsula (East Coast) ? See one of the World's best views from Mount Wellington ? Tahune Forest Air Walk (Huon Valley near Geeveston) ? Enjoy Richmond and the Coal River Valley Wineries ? Cascade Brewery Tour (South Hobart) ? Sail the Derwent River on the "Lady Nelson" ? Cruise or drive to Peppermint Bay for a wonderful meal and great wines ? Experience the buzz at Australia's first casino, Wrest Point ? Relax in the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Hobart's Domain ? The Tasmanian Museum is certainly worth a visit Or for something really different: Just stay at home, read a book, paint the next masterpiece, listen to music, and enjoy the views. Hobart is Australia's second oldest capital city, and nestles between Mount Wellington and the Derwent River Estuary on one of the World's great deepwater ports around Sullivan's Cove and Victoria and Constitution Docks. There is plenty of history to explore. Hobart is also the destination for the famous ocean racing classic, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. When the yachts arrive at the end of December each year, and the crews mix with the thousands of tourists enjoying a Hobart summer and the dockside "Taste of Tasmania", it makes for one of the greatest Christmas/New Year experiences Australia can offer.
