Go west and experience the NSW Central West today! There are so many long, straight roads, quaint towns and friendly people that cry one word loud and clear: country!
If you’re seeking a taste of country – that’s not too far away from the creature comforts of town - for your next holiday or weekend, why not check out the NSW Central West? There are so many great spots in this great region, just waiting for you to explore.
The Mudgee Region, Lithgow, Bathurst, Orange, Wellington and Parkes…these are great places ideal for your next weekend or holiday!
And from Sydney, two hours west in your car and you’ll be in Lithgow – a historic town in NSW Central Coast region. It’s a great drive, so be sure to pack the picnic lunch and an esky! Situated high above sea level at 900 metres, here you’ll experience warm summer days and even the occasional winter snowfall. You’ll also be a short distance away from amazing national parks including the Wollemi National Park. We recommend you check out the Zig Zag Railway, The Belgrave Park Alpaca Stud and State Mine Heritage Park. And if you’re there at the right time, go visit the Bowenfels Station Markets, on the first and third Saturdays of the month.
A little further west of Lithgow and you’ll arrive in Bathurst – another historic town with beautiful heritage-listed buildings, tree-lined streets and beautiful parklands. In fact, Bathurst is Australia’s oldest inland settlement, so it’s got a rich history. Throughout Australia, Bathurst is famous for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama, held in October. There are also plenty of great cafes, art galleries and the beautiful McPhillamy Park lookout, Ohkuma Japanese Garden and Grove Creek Falls.
A little over three hours drive west of Sydney, you’ll find Orange – a lovely rural city which is actually located at the base of an extinct volcano. This town is known for its delicious local produce which you can purchase direct from the farmers who produce it. There are plenty of cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, gorgeous parks and gardens and of course, the breathtaking natural surroundings. Be sure to take a walk on the City Heritage Trail and take a tour around the Ophir mines. The hikes on the walking tracks on Mount Canobolas – the highest point in a straight line between the Blue Mountains and Perth - are great as well.
Four hours from Sydney and you’ll arrive in the Mudgee region, with its national parks and nature reserves, complete with spectacular scenery and World Heritage listed bush land. This town of historic streets also offers you open air cinema events, food and wine festivals, and a fantastic array of local arts and crafts.
About 357 kilometres north-west of Sydney, you’ll discover the second oldest town west of the Blue Mountains – Wellington. Many people stop over in Wellington en route to Dubbo, and it is here where you will discover one of the best town parks around and loads of historical buildings. Not far away you’ll find the Wellington Caves – a must visit when you’re staying in the area – along with the botanical gardens, Lake Burrendong, the wineries and the Burrendong Arboretum.
Four hours’ drive west of Sydney, and you’ll arrive in Parkes – famous for the Parkes Observatory. Again, it’s a town rich in history with many connections to the bushrangers of old and gold-mining. Be sure to check out the Goobang National Park and perhaps camp or fish on the Lachlan River. Lake Cargelligo is a great place for water sports and you can also learn more about the bushranger history at Escort Rock, Eugowra. We also recommend the Pioneer Park Antique Machinery Museum in Parkes and Lake Cowal – the state’s largest natural lake.
